Blog by Mark Lincoln. Contains New Zealand news items and items of interest. One focus is the Christchurch earthquake and the rebuild.
The 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck at about 4:35 am. Thankfully, the day was warm and still (unlike the cold driving rain and hail of yesterday afternoon).

Robbie and Nicola watch Laura and a helpful neighbour remove the broken chimney.
The chimney busted right through the wooden beam holding up the roof. I'm told it may an alarming noise.
(It was already opened up mid-way through a repair. But it wasn't on the floor!)
Roof lost. This was not that uncommon a site around the neighbourhood.
Our neighbours, Laura and Robbie, were unlucky enough to have their chimney fall into the roof rather than off the house.
Laura Young and I tying down tarps over the hole in the roof. We did what we could to tie it down with tension and weigh it down with bricks tied to the tarps. Why? Because gale-force winds are predicted for tomorrow (Sunday) and rain on Tuesday.
Laura and her neighbour getting the chimney down before it comes through their ceiling. Ominous cracks were growing in the ceiling.

Ten years on and these recordings are a raw reminder of that fateful day.
A post on the NZ Raw blog written by Mark Lincoln on 3 March 2011. Mark says, "Sydenham Church - this is the one that was demolished and then suddenly everyone started asking why it was demolished - somewhere along the line there was a communication error and a demolition company knocked down the church without speaking to the Heritage Trust".
Photograph captioned by Fairfax, "Raw sewage over flooding from sewer into Martin family's garden, path and lawn".
A post on the NZ Raw blog written by Mark Lincoln on 4 September 2010. Mark says, "This is the first [blog post] I wrote on 4th Sept. I always remember an announcer on the radio having the first on-air interview with Geonet/EQC (obviously only 1 or 2 staff members at that stage!). The announcer asked if the aftershocks would carry on for much longer and the Geonet guy said they could carry on for a few weeks. Radio announcer seemed shocked".

A post on the NZ Raw blog written by Mark Lincoln on 24 February 2011. Mark says, "I think this is the first post I wrote after the Feb 2011 earthquake. That first photo was my first view after coming out of the office. There's a popular wide panoramic photo that someone took from the Port Hills of all of the dust rising up from the city - the photo in the blog post shows what it looked like from within the dust cloud! There are people gathering further down the street where a building has collapsed".
