The center of the river has slumped and the two banks have moved about a meter closer together which caused this footbridge to be so twisted. There is a suggestion that this be left as a memorial to the earthquake.

Rolleston/Burnham, South Island, NZ It's been a busy few weeks! Was away on geology fieldtrips all the previous two weeks, then on Saturday morning 4th September 2010 at 4.35 am we got woken in Westport to a reasonable but very long earthquake. My husband was back in Christchurch at the time and texted me saying "are you ok?". I replied, "yes!"...

Christchurch Square Clock Tower damaged by Equake

The clock face on the left is showing the correct time. The clock face on the right stopped at the moment of the big earthquake in CHCH on Sept 4th at 4.25am. It stayed like that for a week until fixed. Interestingly that face has not shown the correct time since.

Laura Young and I tying down tarps over the hole in the roof. We did what we could to tie it down with tension and weigh it down with bricks tied to the tarps. Why? Because gale-force winds are predicted for tomorrow (Sunday) and rain on Tuesday.

Taken as the severity of the situation began to sink in to most of the people wandering around. Police, Fire and other emergency personal showed a fantastic response to how they dealt with the situation they had.

It is hard to imagine the destruction which surrounds this area on such a beautiful clear calm sunny spring morning, It seems as if Christchuch has changed forever. I wonder how long it will take us to recover.
