Canterbury Earthquake - Peter Beck

The head of the Christchurch cathedral thinks people visiting the church may have been killed there when the quake hit this afternoon. The Dean of Christchurch, Peter Beck, says they rushed to get as many people out of the Cathedral as they could.

The Octagon Live Restaurant (formerly Trinity Church) on Worcester Street. Steel bracing has been placed on the tower to limit further damage from aftershocks. Sculptures of a cyclist, bungee jumper, rock climber and kayaker can be seen on the bracing posts.

We turn out attention to the Garden City, first celebrating the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s 60th anniversary with violinist Natalia Lomeiko, then organist Martin Setchell on the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church organ rising from the rubble.

Meanwhile the other end of the building has sunk about 50cm splitting the building into thirds. The sand you can see is what came bubbling up out of the ground due to liquifaction.
