Between September 4, 2010 and December 23, 2011, a series of earthquakes struck the South Island of New Zealand including the city of Christchurch producing heavy damage. During the strongest shaking, the unreinforced masonry (URM) building stock in Christchurch was subjected to seismic loading equal to approximately 150-200% of code values. Post-earthquake reconnaissance suggested numerous failures of adhesive anchors used for retrofit connection of roof and floor diaphragms to masonry walls. A team of researchers from the Universities of Auckland (NZ) and Minnesota (USA) conducted a field investigation on the performance of new adhesive anchors installed in existing masonry walls. Variables included adhesive type, anchor diameter, embedment length, anchor inclination, and masonry quality. Buildings were selected that had been slated for demolition but which featured exterior walls that had not been damaged. A video of an interview with James Jameson about the lack of access to his apartment in the Victoria Apartments. Many of Jameson's possessions have been trapped in the building since the 22 February 2011 earthquake, including irreplaceable art and book collections. After the earthquake, Jameson was given a couple of hours to retrieve his computer and other essentials, but he has not been allowed in since. Jameson talks about the lack of communication from the authorities , the likelihood that his possessions have been ruined, and his inability to make an insurance claim until he knows he definitely cannot retrieve his possessions.

On 22 February 2011, Ōtautahi Christchurch was struck by a devastating earthquake. The city was changed forever: lives were lost, buildings destroyed and much of the city’s infrastructure needed to be repaired or replaced. One of the unexpected outcomes of the process of recovery was the volume of archaeological work that was carried out in the city, including the substantial amount of buildings archaeology that was undertaken (that is, recording standing buildings prior to and during their demolition, using archaeological techniques). Amongst the numerous buildings recorded in this way were 101 houses from across the city (but concentrated in those areas hit hardest by the earthquakes), built between 1850 and 1900. This work yielded a wealth of data about what houses in the city looked like in the nineteenth century. It is this data that forms the core of my thesis, providing an opportunity to examine the question of what life was like in nineteenth century Christchurch through these houses and the people who built them. Christchurch was founded in 1850 by European settlers, most of whom were English. These people came to New Zealand to build a better life for themselves and their families. For many of them, this ‘better life’ included the possibility of owning their own home and, in some instances, building that house (or at least, commissioning its construction). The buildings archaeology data collected following the Canterbury earthquakes enabled a detailed analysis of what houses in the city looked like in the nineteenth century – their form, and both their external and internal appearance – and how this changed as the century progressed. A detailed examination of the lives of those who built 21 of the houses enabled me to understand why each house looked the way it did, and how the interplay of class, budget and family size and expectations (amongst other factors) shaped each house. It is through these life stories that more about life in Christchurch in the nineteenth century was revealed. These are stories of men and women, of success and failure, of businesses and bankruptcies. There are themes that run through the stories: class, appearances, death, religion, gender, improvement. Just as importantly, though, they reveal the everyday experiences of people as they set about building a new city. Thus, through the archaeology of the houses and the history of the people who built them, an earthquake has revealed more about life in nineteenth century Christchurch, as well as providing the means for a deeper understanding of the city’s domestic architecture.

In the aftermath of the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand, the residual capacity and reparability of damaged reinforced concrete (RC) structures was an issue pertinent to building owners, insurers, and structural engineers. Three precast RC moment-resisting frame specimens were extracted during the demolition of the Clarendon Tower in Christchurch after sustaining earthquake damage. These specimens were subjected to quasi-static cyclic testing as part of a research program to determine the reparability of the building. It was concluded that the precast RC frames were able to be repaired and retrofitted to an enhanced strength capacity with no observed reduction in displacement capacity, although the frames with “shear-ductile” detailing exhibited less displacement ductility capacity and energy dissipation capacity than the more conventionally detailed RC frames. Furthermore, the cyclic test results from the earthquake-damaged RC frames were used to verify the predicted inelastic demands applied to the specimens during the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes. https://www.concrete.org/publications/acistructuraljournal.aspx

A protest is underway outside insurance company Vero's Christchurch's office, with building owners dismayed to be still fighting for earthquake repairs 10 years on. The protest was organised by the owners of an 11 unit apartment block in New Brighton, who says Vero is purposefully delaying progress to wear them down. The increasing prevalence of mixed-material buildings that combine concrete walls and steel frames in New Zealand, coupled with a lack of specific design and detailing guidelines for concrete wall-steel beam connections, underscores the need for comprehensive research to ensure that these structures behave as intended during earthquakes. Bolted web plate connections, commonly found in steel framing systems, are typically used to connect steel beams to concrete walls. These connections are idealised as pinned during design. However, research on steel framing systems has shown that these connections can develop significant stiffness and moment resistance when subjected to large rotations during seismic loading, potentially leading to brittle failure when used in concrete wall to steel beam applications. This thesis was written to understand the seismic performance of concrete wall-steel beam bolted web plate connections, providing experimental evidence, numerical modelling insights, and design recommendations to address critical gaps in current design practices. The study is divided into three phases. First, a review of 50 concrete wall-steel frame buildings in Auckland and Christchurch was conducted to understand current design practices and typical connection details. The findings revealed significant variation in design and detailing practices and a lack of specific guidelines for concrete wall-steel beam connections. Second, an experimental programme was conducted on four full-scale concrete wall-steel beam sub-assemblages, each incorporating variations in connection detailing. The tests were designed to quantify the rotation capacity of concrete wall-steel beam connections, identify failure modes and investigate the effectiveness of potential connection improvements. Results demonstrated that concrete wall-steel beam bolted web plate connections designed using current design standards and following existing practices are vulnerable to non-ductile failure characterised by concrete breakout. However, using slotted holes in the web plate and bent reinforcing bar anchors instead of headed stud anchors improved connection rotation capacity. Third, a numerical model of a case study building was developed on OpenSeesPy, with different connection conditions assumed based on the experimental results. Pushover and time history analyses were conducted to evaluate the implications of different connection conditions (pinned vs non-pinned) on global building response and local member demands. The findings revealed that using non-pinned connection conditions does not significantly affect the global building response and shear and bending moment demands on lateral load-resisting elements. However, doing so generates overstrength moments on the connections that induce different actions on out-of-plane concrete walls connected to steel beams. Synthesising findings from all three phases, this thesis concludes with a proposed design procedure for concrete wall-steel beam connections based on a capacity design approach to ensure ductile failure modes and suppress brittle ones. Key recommendations include selecting appropriate bolt hole geometry and anchorage, providing sufficient rotation capacity, and accounting for connection overstrength in global analyses.
An architect and art historian is setting up an action group to oppose the demolition of one of the most well-known churches in Christchurch, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. The church, registered as a Category 1 building with Heritage New Zealand, was damaged in the 2011 earthquakes and has sat in a state of disrepair ever since. Thousands of people have turned out for the National Memorial Service in Ōtautahi today, where the 185 victims who died in the Christchurch earthquake 10 years ago are being remembered. Maurice Gardiner's sister, Donna Manning, died in the CTV building collapse. Ms Manning was the presenter of CTV's Good Living Show, and her brother describes her as someone who was the life and soul of the party, and cared deeply for others.
