A misaligned brick wall in front of a property with silt still piled up around it. During the earthquake, liquefaction drove silt to the surface where it erupted out of the ground like a volcano and formed a pile like the one seen here.

A precarious chimney on the roof of a house. Most of the bricks at the base of the chimney have broken away and fallen to the ground. The rest are still holding together. It will need to be deconstructed and removed.

A crack next to the Avon River caused by the ground slumping after the 4 September earthquake. A blue pipe has been laid over the crack. Many kilometres of these temporary water pipes have been run overground in Avonside to supply houses with water.

Damage to a house in Richmond. Bricks have fallen from a wall, and there is a visible gap between the foundation and the surrounding ground. The photographer comments, "The foundation and a section of the wall of the dining room have shifted and cracked. The dining room floor is very springy".

It would have been a glorious Spring day in Christchurch had it not been for the magnitude 7.1 earthquake at 4:30 am. All the water and silt you can see covering the street in this photo erupted from the ground following the earthquake.

The ground slipped laterally at this previously unknown faultline across Highfield Road in mid-Canterbury, resulting in a relative displacement of at least 2 metres and the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Saturday 4 September 2010. Note the now misaligned fence posts, hedge and road.

Cables have been attached to the balcony over the walkway and braced to posts cemented into the ground. This is to stop the building from slumping further.
