Medway Street Bridge - River Road side looking upstream

The center of the river has slumped and the two banks have moved about a meter closer together which caused this footbridge to be so twisted. There is a suggestion that this be left as a memorial to the earthquake.

Oxford Terrace Baptist Church on the corner of Madras St and Oxford Terrace, and alongside the Central City Fire Station on Kilmore St. The organ pipes have been saved and safely removed into safe keeping by the South Island Organ Company.

Post the earthquakes land has sunk and in this case the track is below high tide level. It would have been at least 500mm above the highest tide level prior to the recent earthquakes that started on 04/09/10.

The result of the magnitude 7.1 earthquake at 4.35am on September 4th 2010. The ballustrade of these buildings collapsed onto the Victorian veranda crushing it. Taken 20 days after the quake. Colombo Street in Sydenham, Christchurch - looking towards the City Centre.

All this is "red zone" after the earthquakes and has to be demolished. The roof of my "old" house (now owned by the government) can be seen between the third and fourth river-side houses.

Reasons why it pays not to be a smoker - if the quake had hit during opening hours there would have been probably half a dozen smokers underneath the black awning crushed by falling bricks.

Hehehe ..... did the surveyors get the road setout wrong? This previously straight road is now kinked across this previously unknown faultline along which the Saturday 4 September 2010 magnitude 7.1 earthquake originated.

Taken as the severity of the situation began to sink in to most of the people wandering around. Police, Fire and other emergency personal showed a fantastic response to how they dealt with the situation they had.

It is hard to imagine the destruction which surrounds this area on such a beautiful clear calm sunny spring morning, It seems as if Christchuch has changed forever. I wonder how long it will take us to recover.

Closeup of the Grand Chancellor showing the south eastern corner, which is where it has slumped and broken and is now leaning in that direction. I note that they have taken some equipment out of the roof, you can see daylight through the gaps on the other side. The old New Brighton Power Boat Club building was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, and is only now (July 2012) being demolished. The building is just down the road from where I grew up and is a New Brighton iconic building.
