A typical "sand volcano" caused by liquefaction where the soil loses its strength during the earthquake and the silt rises upwards, ejecting out of a hole like magma in a volcano.
A photograph captioned by BeckerFraserPhotos, "The estuary situated behind Seabreeze Close in Bexley. The estuary shows signs of liquefaction with a large number of sand volcanoes appearing".
A photograph of volunteers from the Wellington Emergency Management Office on the side of a road in Christchurch. Cracks and liquefaction can be seen at the entrance to a property.
A photograph of emergency management personnel examining a Stonehurst Accommodation building on Gloucester Street. There is liquefaction in the car park in front of the building.
Damage to River Road in Richmond. The road surface is badly cracked and slumped, and liquefaction silt covers part of the road. The photographer comments, "Liquefaction in River Rd. This is minor compared to many streets in town".
A photograph of an earthquake damaged road in Christchurch. Road cones, cracks, and the remants of liquefaction can be seen on the road. There is a queue of traffic along the street.
A photograph of a residential street in Christchurch which is covered in liquefaction. In the distance a sign indicates that the speed limit is 30 kilometres an hour. To the left is a portaloo.
A car mired in liquefaction in a car park on Chester Street in the aftermath of the 22 February earthquake. Behind it, the collapsed Durham Street Methodist Church can be seen.
A large crack in the ground at Sullivan Park in Avonside which has resulted from the 4 September 2010 earthquake. Remnants of liquefaction silt can be seen around the edges of the crack.
A member of the Student Volunteer Army leaning on her spade as she waits for a bus. This student has spend the day of clearing liquefaction from Christchurch properties.
A photograph captioned by BeckerFraserPhotos, "A mound of liquefaction next to an angled street light on Liggins Street in the Horseshoe Lake area".
A University of Canterbury student assembling a wheelbarrow in the UCSA car park. The wheelbarrow belongs to the Student Volunteer Army and is to be used for clearing liquefaction from Christchurch properties.

This study determined areas of different liquefaction susceptibility in Hurunui District based mainly on geological data, with some limited borehole strata interpretation. Geotechnical data was not analysed. This was the same method used in the earthquake hazard assessments for engineering lifelines in other districts in Canterbury. Hurunui District was the first district that a hazard assessment for engineering lifelines was undertaken for (in 2000) and it did not include a liquefaction susceptibility map like the other district earthquake hazard assessments did. There are no recommendations associated with this report. See Object Overview for background and usage information.
