The Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission has heard how close the city's tallest building came to collapsing entirely during the February 22nd earthquake.

Grand Chancellor checked for damage four times before February

The Canterbury earthquake's Royal Commission has heard that the Hotel Grand Chancellor was checked for earthquake damage - and cleared for use four times prior to the February 22nd earthquake.

Damage to the Lyttelton Hotel on Norwich Quay. The top of the building has crumbled, bringing the roof down with it. Bricks have fallen on the awning and all along the footpath. Wire fencing and road cones have been used to create a cordon around the building.

Tourists forced to stay in marae, arts centre in Wellington

Hundreds of tourists have spent the night in makeshift accommodation in Wellington after fleeing earthquake hit Christchurch. The tourists were flown to the capital by the Royal New Zealand Airforce, many without passports, money and belongings left behind in hotels.

Part one of the audio that makes up Gap Filler's 29th project, the Transitional City Audio Tour. This part of the tour begins at the Pallet Pavilion on the corner of Kilmore and Durham Streets. It includes commentary on the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Town Hall, as well as the Captain Cook and Queen Victoria statues in Victoria Square. The tour then moves down Armagh Street to New Regent Street where there is a discussion of Trambiance, a series of sound performances in the Christchurch tram. The tour also includes commentary on the rebuild of New Regent Street and the Isaac Theatre Royal.
