What does it mean to “be in a mood” at school? This question guides this thesis, which analyses the relationship between young people’s experiences of moods and the discourses and pedagogies of moods they encounter at school. The emotions and moods of young people in Christchurch, New Zealand, have, in recent years, come under considerable scrutiny. A national decline in rates of youth mental health and concern over the lasting psychological effects of the 2010-2011 Christchurch Earthquakes have justified increased attention to and funding for youth mental health promotion and school-based mental health education programs. Drawing on a year-long school ethnography at a public girl’s high school in Christchurch with 22 Year 10 students (age 14-15), this thesis examines how young people interact with state and psychiatric discourses of youth and mental health. It explores how young people integrate and transform these discourses in their experiences and knowledges of moods as they relate to mental health, education, friendships, and the (in)stability of the self in time. Additionally, this thesis proposes an anthropological reconsideration of moods. Developing insights from phenomenological and medical anthropology and bringing them into conversation with ethnographic analysis, the approach to moods in this thesis sees two necessarily interconnected ways in which moods become significant for understanding subjectivity and contemporary society. On the one hand, moods are an integral dimension of phenomenological experience in which it is possible to dwell in affective ambiguities, producing open-ended horizons of experience. On the other hand, young people’s experience of moods is refracted through moods’ medicalised formulation as experience that can be bounded, taxonomized, transformed into kinds of knowledge about the self, and thus acted on in distinct and morally situated ways. Attending to the experience of “being in a mood” at school reveals how medical and psychiatric knowledges are woven into moral experience in the everyday. This moral experience of moods has critical implications for how young people in New Zealand today situate the self in relationships, in the world, and in time, and therefore is particularly revealing for developing anthropological understandings of teenage subjectivity

This project looks at how destroyed architecture, although physically lost, fundamentally continues to exist within human memories as a non-physical entity. The site chosen is Avonside Girls’ High School in Christchurch, New Zealand, a school heavily damaged during the February 22nd earthquake in 2011. The project focuses on the Main Block, a 1930s masonry building which had always been a symbol for the school and its alumni.  The key theories relevant to this are studies on non-material architecture and memory as these subjects investigate the relationship between conceptual idea and the triggering of it. This research aims to study how to fortify a thought-based architecture against neglect, similar to the retrofitting of physical structures.  In doing so, the importance of the emotive realm of architecture and the idea behind a building (as opposed to the built component itself) is further validated, promoting more broadminded stances regarding the significance of the idea over the object. A new method for disaster recovery and addressing trauma from lost architecture is also acquired. Factors regarding advanced structural systems and programmes are not covered within the scope of this research because the project instead explores issues regarding the boundaries between the immaterial and material.  The project methodology involves communicating a narrative derived from the memories alumni and staff members have of the old school block. The approach for portraying the narrative is based on a list of strategies obtained from case studies.  The final product of the research is a new design for the high school, conveyed through a set of atmospheric drawings that cross-examines the boundaries between the physical and non-physical realms by representing the version of the school that exists solely within memories.

As part of a seismic retrofit scheme, surface bonded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) fabric was applied to two unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings located in Christchurch, New Zealand. The unreinforced stone masonry of Christchurch Girls’ High School (GHS) and the unreinforced clay brick masonry Shirley Community Centre were retrofitted using surface bonded GFRP in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Much of the knowledge on the seismic performance of GFRP retrofitted URM was previously assimilated from laboratory-based experimental studies with controlled environments and loading schemes. The 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence provided a rare opportunity to evaluate the GFRP retrofit applied to two vintage URM buildings and to document its performance when subjected to actual design-level earthquake-induced shaking. Both GFRP retrofits were found to be successful in preserving architectural features within the buildings as well as maintaining the structural integrity of the URM walls. Successful seismic performance was based on comparisons made between the GFRP retrofitted GHS building and the adjacent nonretrofitted Boys’ High School building, as well as on a comparison between the GFRP retrofitted and nonretrofitted walls of the Shirley Community Centre building. Based on detailed postearthquake observations and investigations, the GFRP retrofitted URM walls in the subject buildings exhibited negligible to minor levels of damage without delamination, whereas significant damage was observed in comparable nonretrofitted URM walls AM - Accepted Manuscript
