PDF slides of a presentation given by Dr. Thomas Wilson from the UC Geology department in November 2010. The presentation was delivered at a GeoNZ conference in Auckland.
A house in Pacific Park (Bexley) that borders the Bexley Wetlands. Land moved towards the wetlands and the closer to wetlands the more severe the damage.
This study investigates the uncertainty of simulated earthquake ground motions for smallmagnitude events (Mw 3.5 – 5) in Canterbury, New Zealand. 148 events were simulated with specified uncertainties in: event magnitude, hypocentre location, focal mechanism, high frequency rupture velocity, Brune stress parameter, the site 30-m time-averaged shear wave velocity (Vs30), anelastic attenuation (Q) and high frequency path duration. In order to capture these uncertainties, 25 realisations for each event were generated using the Graves and Pitarka (2015) hybrid broadband simulation approach. Monte-Carlo realisations were drawn from distributions for each uncertainty, to generate a suite of simulation realisations for each event and site. The fit of the multiple simulation realisations to observations were assessed using linear mixed effects regression to generate the systematic source, path and site effects components across all ground motion intensity measure residuals. Findings show that additional uncertainties are required in each of the three source, path, and site components, however the level of output uncertainty is promising considering the input uncertainties included.

An abandoned residential property at 20 Seabreeze Close in Bexley. Weeds are growing through the cracks in the ground and the yard has become overgrown.

Concrete slabs laid on the ground of the Crowne Plaza Hotel's demolition site. This will serve as the floor of the Pallet Pavilion.
Felt hearts and bunting sewn to the wire fencing in front of the Ground Culinary Centre in Lyttelton. They provide a bit of beauty and hope to an otherwise depressing scene.
The damaged Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. The tower on the north-west corner of the building has partially collapsed, and stones have fallen onto the ground in front.
A house in Hororata. The chimney has fallen, taking the fence with it. Part of it can still be seen lying on the ground.
The top portion of this building on Manchester Street has fallen away, littering the ground below. USAR codes have been spray painted on the walls and footpath.
Rubble lying on the ground in front of the main entrance of the Peterborough Apartments. The rubble is from the top of the front gable above.

The ANZ Bank Chambers on the corner of High and Lichfield Streets has been cordoned off from the public. WORLD, a clothing store was housed on the ground floor.
A photograph of the Cranmer Centre. Below a collection of masonry has been removed from the building and placed on the ground.

The base of the tower on the right of this picture has sunk about 25cm so that the lower course of bricks have disappeared below ground level. Meanwhile the other end of the building has sunk about 50cm splitting the building into thirds. The sand you can see is what came bubbling up out of the ground due to liquifaction. Unfortunately the build...
