Indigenous Peoples retain traditional coping strategies for disasters despite the marginalisation of many Indigenous communities. This article describes the response of Māori to the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2012 through analyses of available statistical data and reports, and interviews done three months and one year after the most damaging event. A significant difference between Māori and ‘mainstream’ New Zealand was the greater mobility enacted by Māori throughout this period, with organisations having roles beyond their traditional catchments throughout the disaster, including important support for non-Māori. Informed engagement with Indigenous communities, acknowledging their internal diversity and culturally nuanced support networks, would enable more efficient disaster responses in many countries.
An article from the Media Studies Journal of Aotearoa New Zealand Volume 14, Number 1. The article is titled, "Social Media, Crisis Mapping and the Christchurch Earthquakes of 2011". It was written by Abi Beatson, Angi Buettner, and Tony Schirato.
A view down Cashel Street from the Bridge of Remembrance, showing earthquake damage to several buildings along Cashel Mall. In the background the Hotel Grand Chancellor can be seen, a Christchurch hotel that was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. The collapse of a key supporting shear wall caused the building to visibly lean to one side.
A view down Maling Street in Avonside showing damage to the road surface and the footpath that has resulted from the 4 September 2010 earthquake. Beside the footpath the blue lids of septic tanks can be seen. These tanks were installed in front of Avonside properties to allow residents to use their toilets after the earthquake.
A photograph of the earthquake damage to the Canterbury Provincial Chambers on Durham Street. The top of one of the chambers has crumbled and the masonry has fallen onto the footpath. Scaffolding which was erected after the 4 September 2010 earthquake has also fallen. Wire fences have been placed around the building as a cordon.
A photograph of members of Civil Defence and other organisations helping with the emergency response to the Canterbury earthquakes. They are standing on the corner of Montreal and Gloucester Streets outside the Christchurch Art Gallery. The Art Gallery served as the headquarters for the Civil Defence after the 22 February 2011 earthquake.
A photograph of a poster on the window of the Earthquake Services building on the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Ferry Road. The poster is in the style of Barack Obama's "Hope" campaign poster, and depicts Bryan Staples with the message "Insurance, hope".
