As a way of reducing traffic - and hence damaging vibrations - many streets are partially blocked by these signs. Also many of them have a 30kph speed limit.

The bridge on River Road just before the Banks Ave turn off. Looking down at the Avon River side of the Shirley Stream bridge showing how much the ground has slumped by - notice the unpainted concrete now exposed.

The ground slipped laterally at this previously unknown faultline across Highfield Road in mid-Canterbury, resulting in a relative displacement of at least 2 metres and the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Saturday 4 September 2010. Note the now misaligned fence posts, hedge and road.
