Christchurch Earthquake - Cathedral Square Open

A path between the new Cashel Mall shopping area and Cathedral Square was opened this weekend and about 1000 people have gone through every hour. It's the first time this section of city has been open to the public since the 22 February 2011 earthquake.

Today was the first time I have been to the earthquake memorial since it was completed and opened on 22nd February 2017, six years after the devastating quake that killed the 185 that are named on this wall. I knew two of the people on the list.

Quake Damage

When I lived in Christchurch back in 2004-2005, this was a building I went past on the bus every day to get to and from work in the city. After the big quake on 04/09/10 (7.1 magnitude), its been seriously damaged. As have many more of the shops in this area. Only it is worse this time! As from Wednesday I won't have car access to the property, nor the street, nor one of the neighbouring streets - for a month at least! A second attempt to do a sewer repair after the earthquakes - yes I know they were 3 to 2½ years ago!

Another city walk around, this time with my brother-in-law from Auckland. Also went to the Quake City exhibition in the city organised by the Canterbury Museum. First fine day for a while. This bus is used as a chocolate restaurant, and is parked next to the Pallet Pavilion on the site of the old Park Royal Hotel.
