The city side of the South Brighton bridge. Approaches on both sides will need extensive work before this bridge can re-open. Bridge opened for traffic less than a week later, but still (23/09) has 30kmh speed restriction.

The center of the river has slumped and the two banks have moved about a meter closer together which caused this footbridge to be so twisted. There is a suggestion that this be left as a memorial to the earthquake.

Work is continuing on the earthquake damaged South New Brighton bridge. Avon River to the left, Avon-Heathcote Estuary the other side of the bridge.

Still awaiting a repair, but with so many bridges closed or partially closed we are lucky this one had what maybe minor damage.
Prior to the earthquakes the stone wall at right was near road level. Now it is about 1.5m (4-5ft) lower.
Eighty years and then the damage was done. Result of the earthquake on 22/02/11.
