Liquefaction erupted throughout the city during each of the major earthquakes. It had to be cleared and everyone piled it onto the roadside, where it was eventually picked up by City Council trucks. The fine dust permeated the air for weeks, driving many to wear dust masks while outside.

The old New Brighton Power Boat Club building was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, and is only now (July 2012) being demolished. The building is just down the road from where I grew up and is a New Brighton iconic building.

The center of the river has slumped and the two banks have moved about a meter closer together which caused this footbridge to be so twisted. There is a suggestion that this be left as a memorial to the earthquake.

Telegraph Road was a straight road before the recent 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The fault ran right through here and now the road has a dramatic kink in it.

Aftermath of September 4th Earthquake in Canterbury. Shops on Colombo Street in Christchurch - damaged in earthquake and then partially demolished to reduce risk from unstable materials which might otherwise be dislodged in strong winds or subsequent aftershocks. Laura Young and I tying down tarps over the hole in the roof. We did what we could to tie it down with tension and weigh it down with bricks tied to the tarps. Why? Because gale-force winds are predicted for tomorrow (Sunday) and rain on Tuesday.

The farmer swore that his fence was erected in a straingt line, but mother nature had other ideas! Aftermath of the Saturday 4 September 2010 magnitude 7.1 earthquake at the previously unknown faultline along which the quake originated.
