A path between the new Cashel Mall shopping area and Cathedral Square was opened this weekend and about 1000 people have gone through every hour. It's the first time this section of city has been open to the public since the 22 February 2011 earthquake.

A small wooden cross is inserted between stones laid out in the shape of a large cross. The photographer comments, "This is an Earthquake Memorial on Manchester Street, Christchurch, New Zealand. This message is on the tree next to the memorial: 'Earthquake Memorial. 185 people died as a result of the 22 February 2011 earthquake. 185 precious lives are remembered here, with 185 pieces of Halswell stone recovered from St Luke's Church, damaged beyond repair on that day. May they rest in peace. St Luke's in the City'".

Wire fencing has been placed around the buildings as a cordon. Signs on the fences indicated that the T Bakery and Red Chilli are open.

A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Christchurch and the wider South Island, causing widespread damage, two serious injuries and power cuts to most of the city. Clinton Gooch was awake when the quake hit and was running downstairs to get outside when the wall of his flat collapsed causing the windows to shatter in the shop below".

I visited the mall yesterday and was quite impressed with what they have done. The photographer comments, "Two members of our office carrying gear through the cordon. This was taken shortly after the 4th September earthquake. Police allowed us free access past the cordon and simply advised us to watch out for falling masonry. The access situation was much different after the February aftershock".
