The Avon River loop around Porritt Park has risen with the quake. Huge cracks are all through Porritt Park (rowing, hockey and cricket venue). The main section of the river is in a man made cut behind the buildings in the background of this pic.

Nearly two weeks after the 7.1 earthquake, and a week after demolition started, this is the end of The Valley Inn in Heathcote.

Was away on geology fieldtrips all the previous two weeks, then on Saturday morning 4th September 2010 at 4.35 am we got woken in Westport to a reasonable but very long earthquake. My husband was back in Christchurch at the time and texted me saying "are you ok?". I replied, "yes!"...
When I lived in Christchurch back in 2004-2005, this was a building I went past on the bus every day to get to and from work in the city.
After the big quake on 04/09/10 (7.1 magnitude), its been seriously damaged. As have many more of the shops in this area.
Thankfully no lives were lost in the quake, and I'm glad I wasnt there to feel it eith...
The cartoon shows a rugby goalpost in a bad state of repair; it is held together with bandages and when a player kicks a ball that represents 'World Cup Games' towards the goalpost, it hits one of the side posts that flies a Christchurch flag, causing the post to break. Context - the decision that Christchurch will not be able to host any of the Rugby World Cup games because of the damage caused by the earthquakes of 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011.

A couple in a red-zoned dog kennel, completing the dwelling census. Their accommodation has one room;, their only heating is by body heat and burning furniture; their rent is $1000 per week.
Two years after the earthquakes, the living conditions of many in the 'red zones' of Christchurch was poor, owing to local body, government and insurance companies' tardiness.

The EQC (Earthquake Commission) has developed new standards and designs to help rebuild Christchurch after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The Department of Building and Housing have produced some generic building foundation and floor designs that can be used for residential homes being built or repaired on liquefied, tilting, unsettled and/or damaged land.
