The base of the tower on the right of this picture has sunk about 25cm so that the lower course of bricks have disappeared below ground level. Meanwhile the other end of the building has sunk about 50cm splitting the building into thirds. The sand you can see is what came bubbling up out of the ground due to liquifaction. Unfortunately the build...

The Avon River loop around Porritt Park has risen with the quake. Huge cracks are all through Porritt Park (rowing, hockey and cricket venue). The main section of the river is in a man made cut behind the buildings in the background of this pic.

Christchurch city experienced a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on September 4 at 4:35 am. The epicentre was 40 km west of the city. It was the most damaging earthquake in New Zealand since the Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931, but there was no loss of life. It was fortunate the earthquake occurred when the central city streets were deserted, as there w...

Annette Preen's house in background. See the angle the front of house is on. This maybe a write off as it is trashed inside with liquification occurring right under the house and bursting through concrete floor. Annette was featured on TV3 news tonight. Go to TV3 website to see ne...

A view after the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch.
Victoria Street. So sad to see history die - both buildings and business. Sign on the back wall says, "You gotta be there Christchurch" - sadly ironic!
Given a bit of a HDR process to add some of what I was "feeling" at the time.

It's been a busy few weeks! Was away on geology fieldtrips all the previous two weeks, then on Saturday morning 4th September 2010 at 4.35 am we got woken in Westport to a reasonable but very long earthquake. My husband was back in Christchurch at the time and texted me saying "are you ok?". I replied, "yes!"...
When I lived in Christchurch back in 2004-2005, this was a building I went past on the bus every day to get to and from work in the city.
After the big quake on 04/09/10 (7.1 magnitude), its been seriously damaged. As have many more of the shops in this area.
Thankfully no lives were lost in the quake, and I'm glad I wasnt there to feel it eith...
My house (bought in March 2004) till the government procured it in October 2012, is finally being demolished. It will be an empty section in a couple of days, once they rip up the concrete base.

20140522_8951_EOS M-22 Demolition
Of what many in Christchurch know as the Millers building, but for many recent years was the home to the Christchurch City Council, till just a week or two before the first earthquake of 2010. Now, in mid-2014 it is finally being demolished after nearly 45 months empty. A bus is leaving the new (temporary) bu...
