Awaiting the demolition ball! See the hole punched in by the neighbouring building (now demolished) during the February 22 2011 earthquake. This building is leaning to the north (left) while it's now demolished neighbour was leaning to the south (right).
All because the crap land gave way underneath!
Very sad - was a nice looking building. These cracks are right through the bricks on several of the main columns.
Makes sense that the end of the detour is where the road closes, right?
msh1014: 12. Dead End
Part of a house that fell can be seen on the rocks above right hand containers.
It's five years since the earthquake, and for the first time I feel a sense that the rebuild is taking effect.
In this photo - the left hand building is on the way up, and the right hand building is on the way down.
Low tide on the Avon River at New Brighton/Bexley. Note the original bank and the rock wall slipage on right. The white additions were added in March and April 2011 to protect the properties behind from flooding. Ultimately this area was "red zoned" with all houses removed or to be removed and the ground left till a rehabilitation method can ...

It's been a busy few weeks! Was away on geology fieldtrips all the previous two weeks, then on Saturday morning 4th September 2010 at 4.35 am we got woken in Westport to a reasonable but very long earthquake. My husband was back in Christchurch at the time and texted me saying "are you ok?". I replied, "yes!"...
The permanent closure (to motor vehicles) of the Bexley red zone streets has started.
This was once the main south-north route just west of the Avon River in the New Brighton area, till an expressway (ring road) was built about 80m to the west (right) about 12-13 years ago. Then it became just another suburban street, but now all the houses ...

This used to be a perfectly straight and flat road!
Prior to the earthquakes the stone wall at right was near road level. Now it is about 1.5m (4-5ft) lower.
If you look very closely, running from the nearest right desk to the second desk on the left hand side, you can see my 'fault-line', - the crack that runs the length of the classroom under the lino.

South Brighton Bridge. See the gap between the abutment and the bridge itself (just to right of lower person).
The clock face on the left is showing the correct time. The clock face on the right stopped at the moment of the big earthquake in CHCH on Sept 4th at 4.25am. It stayed like that for a week until fixed. Interestingly that face has not shown the correct time since.
This is the pedestrian bridge in Kaiapoi close to Christchurch. Not the best angle but the whole bridge on the right hand side is twisted and looks like some kind of rollercoaster. Taken one month after the Quake

There are quite a few signs like this around Christchurch after the Quake. This is one of them. Off shot to the right is a leveled patch of ground where the owners furniture restoration shop used to be.

The base of the tower on the right of this picture has sunk so that the lower course of bricks have disappeared below ground level. The sand you can see is what came bubbling up out of the ground due to liquifaction.
My house (bought in March 2004) till the government procured it in October 2012, is finally being demolished. It will be an empty section in a couple of days, once they rip up the concrete base.
Note the rainbow on right.
With the land dropping about 1metre to 1.4metres after the earthquakes, a few roads besides the Avon and Heathcote Rivers are flooded with very high tides. Extra stop banks (on right) erected after the quakes have helped, but the road is now well below high water level.

A planting of native bushes and trees in the old children's playground area in Bexley, Organised by the Facebook group Avon River Park and assisted by ex Bexley residents. This is right in the middle of the Bexley red zone with most houses removed or demolished now.
The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christcurch, after the 6.3 magnitude quake on 22 February 2011. The dome has now been taken down (and is on the ground on the right side of this image) and you can see the orange and green of the workmen's hi-vis in the tower section.
A view after the 6.3 magnatude quake hit Christchurch 22 February 2011.
Monsters in the Rafters
You have no right to do this.
Build me up
Just to break me down.
I wonder how you feel
As I lie here alone.
Fighting the monsters In my mind.
Beyond the rafters
Of the unknown.

The base of the tower on the right of this picture has sunk about 25cm so that the lower course of bricks have disappeared below ground level. Annette Preen's house in background. See the angle the front of house is on. This maybe a write off as it is trashed inside with liquification occurring right under the house and bursting through concrete floor. Annette was featured on TV3 news tonight. Go to TV3 website to see news item.
