Christchurch's Street Art
One of the unexpected outcomes of the earthquakes has been the rise of street art in Christchurch. As buildings have come down, artists have been taking advantage of newly exposed surfaces to create artworks - sometimes with the sanction of the building owner, and sometimes without.
Sometimes the line between art and vandalism can be blurry, and there is often debate about where that line should be drawn, but it is unquestionable that street artists have brought colour and brightness to our damaged city.
Father and son team Paul and Sam Corliss have been documenting the street art of Christchurch. Their photographs span the period from before the earthquakes through to the present, and cover everything from tagging to sanctioned artworks.
Paul and Sam have gifted their vast collection of photographs to CEISMIC. We're slowly working through the process of describing and geolocating them all, which will take some time, but as a taster, we've made the first batch available now.
We'll be adding more photographs to the collection over the coming months, so keep an eye out for them!
